@seals: have you heard of a shipquake? It’s like an earthquake, except it is on a ship.
@Dass: the Spanish Armada could be interpreted twofold. There were babies on board, and the Spanish Armada was merely a basket floating down the river (ocean). The Irish took the babies from the basket (ships) and cared for them.
The second is that all the brave men in an instant ascended to heaven and a great commotion was left behind.

An Aegis class cruiser or destroyer look like no other ships in the world. So Iran normally threatens to blow up other ships and throw things in front of them on the high seas. Is that what we’re supposed to believe?
Nice sentiments from the guy who thinks the Jedi were the bad guys. If you were real I would be concerned Persian.
Matthew, why don’t you join Jedi Scum and see if there really are any gay people in Iran. One person voted against going to war after Pearl Harbor and you are probably their grandchild.

Why cant ships hire their own security? Why do American Taxpayers have to provide security for International shipping lanes?

Piracy on the high seas, especially off the coast of Somalia, has become a scourge threatening human lives and liberty, goods in transit, ships and international trade. The action that any Government’s forces can take is limited by political and diplomatic niceties. Surely it is time to take a lesson from history and allow private enterprise to finance a solution as happened in the Caribbean and elsewhere with the use of privateers?
I think piracy has to be eradicated where their bases are – on land, not at sea. Somalia e.g. is a failed and corrupt state which is unable to stop anything – just the place for a bit of free enterprise, like piracy, and anti-piracy too.

2/2/11 Daily Telegraph:
-“As of this month, some 40 ships are in their hands and more than 800 crew held captive in these seas south of the Gulf of Aden.
-“The safest ships of all are flying the Russian flag: armed guards aboard them simply blow pirate boats out of the water and leave any survivors to drown. Attacks on Russian vessels have abruptly ceased.”

I’m looking for a way to build a real replica of an authentic, or near authentic, sailing ship like a galleon. What would the cost be to re-create a ship from wood, and to maintain it, and operate it on the high seas. Who builds those kinds of ships? It should be of the 17th to 18th century style of ship, with all the rigging. Where do I find a crew to operate it?

On the ocean, in a storm or vs a rouge wave, small boats, I assume, fare worse than large boats.
Per x wave size, what boat/ship length for what chance of survival?
People have been making and sailng boats/ships for a long time, some knowledge of this should be there.
Also is it just the size of the wave or does the wavelength/period come into play as well?
If you can not give a formula, please give 5 examples of boat size vs wave size.
Maybe we can plot this.
Also what is the best boat orientation vs wave for survival? front? rear? sideways??
The last time, in disgust, I just rolled dice to pick the best answer. This time, in total wonder, I may be forced to do the same.

It’s laughable and pathetic. Israel takes control of humanitarian ships in international waters and then sails those people to Israel under threat of force and then upon being forcibly brought to Israel those activists are arrested and charged with entering Israel illegally? Lol……has Israel totally lost the plot?
I wonder what would happen should any activists refuse to sign voluntary deportation papers and seek to take their illegal capture and nonsensical arrest to the Israeli courts? How would the Israeli courts address such a situation?
Lol, if I am wrong then by all means set the record straight.

The international community needs all the help they can get from any country with a credible naval capability to protect innocent ships from ruthless outlawed pirates.

So… I’ve always wanted to be a sailor, and not just on a cruise ship or something like that, but maybe on a commercial fishing boat. I know most guys who do this probably grew up on the sea, and I didn’t. I have no sailing experience; how would I go about just looking into options about if it’s possible for me? I don’t know how realistic it is, but hey, I can dream right? Any help you can give me would be great. Thanks!
The other thing I sort-of forgot to add is that I’m a woman… are there many women who do this kind of thing? How receptive are the men on the ships to women sailing with them?
