This piracy is not taking place in US territorial waters. It’s taking place on the high seas, and does not involve children or other non-consenting third parties. Nobody is forced to go to sea to make a living.
Much of the "global economy" consists of identical commodities crossing oceans in both directions. I see no evidence that you or I benefit from that sort of thing. Why not let the corporations that own the shipping lines absorb the cost of hiring extra security?

After seeing several adverts concerning copyright infringement and after seeing several movies with Johnny Depp, the question arose as to why the act of copyright infringement is referred to as Piracy when most definitions of the term refer the term to Illegal acts upon the high seas.

I think the music companies and / or the media are trying to demonize their own customers.
In legal terms, what has murder and robbery on the high seas (ie Piracy) got to do with copyright infringement?
I think a high court judge would agree that someone found guilty of downloading copyrighted material from the internet would get in trouble for copyright infrindgement… but not theft.
Watch out the little © will report you to record compnies for being a pirate ! Eye Eye me harties…

In Somalia, a man claiming to be spokesman of the pirates holding the Ukrainian ship said the hijackers want million to release the vessel.
